Digestive Tract and Liver Support

From a Naturopathic standpoint, the gastrointestinal (GI) system (stomach, intestine, liver, gallbladder and pancreas) is one of the most important systems in the body. It is responsible for the proper break-down and assimilation of nutrients, and for the proper elimination of waste matter and toxins. Inability of the digestive system to break-down and absorb nutrients results in many of today's health issues.

The modern lifestyle and diet places a huge burden on our digestive system and liver. Factors such as stress, fast food, refined and processed foods, environmental chemicals, and the more recent addition of GMO's, may create imbalances in our digestive systems and tax our liver.

In the modern Western civilization the majority of us no longer practice a "fast" from food, which is very beneficial to the liver. It gives this important organ a chance to "catch up" and process toxins that have accumulated over time. Conversely many other cultures are aware of the importance of this and "fasting" is incorporated into their spiritual practice.

Herbs have been used for hundreds of years as a tonic to all the organs of elimination (skin, kidneys, liver, lower GI tract). Digestive herbs have a role in strengthening and cleansing the digestive system, thereby increasing the body's ability to break down and absorb nutrients.

Digestive herbs can be broken down into three general categories;

  • Bitters: these stimulate the upper digestion to help break-down and absorb nutrients. Many of these have been recently implicated as blood-sugar lowering adjuvants
  • Lower GI tract tonics: these tone the colon and help in elimination of waste matter.
  • Liver tonics: these increase bile production, providing support to and cleansing the liver.
